Atmosphere and Crew Prizes

1981 marks the 75th Anniversary of the Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association. In celebration we have plans for a special Great South Bay Race Week which has been a tradition for 65 years.

Race Week 1981 will have a touch of the past with a new twist. We have often said that Race Week was a family affair and that we wanted the youngsters along. Believing that the best Race Weeks have been family affairs we have made major changes in format.

Race Week is scheduled for Thursday, July 30th through Sunday, August 2nd, with one throw out race. All six races will be at the Babylon Yacht Club. We feel that this will afford an atmosphere of relaxation and good racing over a period of four consecutive days. Those finding it difficult to be off from work may miss the race on Thursday and still qualify for the series as long as they race the remaining five races.

“Get togethers” after the races will provide a Race Week atmosphere which many of our sailors have not experienced in recent years. An innovation this year will be crew prizes for the top competitors in each class. Race Week 1981 should be enjoyed by the whole sailing community.

The combined efforts of Dick Daytz and his Race Committee, and the hospitality of the Babylon Yacht Club will guarantee a superb Race Week. I wish to extend my gratitude to all the individuals and sailors who will make this the best Race Week in recent years.

We are fortunate in having one of the greatest sailing areas in the world with a potential for very keen competition, and the best of camaraderie among sailors. I encourage all of you to become part of the sailing activities of the GSBYRA and let’s have a great 75th Anniversary.

Sincerely,

Bill Ludlum
